I woke up this morning and headed over to the World Trade Center in Boston to pick up my number for a road race I’m running tomorrow called A Run To Remember (long story)
I had no change with me, as usual, so I ended up paying $12 to park in an all-day lot – when all I needed was about 30 min. Anyway, I thought I might as well make use of my money and at least check out the exhibits at the nearby ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) since I had time.
Right as I walked in there is a huge wall art installation called “As Below, So Above” by an artist called Dave Muller. The last place I expected to get a music business lesson was the ICA but there you have it. The whole piece of art is inspired by a pretty complex diagram from a book called “Rock & Roll Is Here To Pay: The History and Politics of the Music Industry” from 1977.
The main part of the art installation is pretty much a flow chart starting from the early fifties and ends in the mid-seventies. It chronicles the growth of popular music from 1955 or so and it includes just about every popular performer from the year-end top 50 album or singles charts. It has over 470 entries from 24 genres.
Pretty cool stuff. If you live in Boston or if you are visiting any time until mid-October you should check it out. I’m including some photos (that’s me in my Zidane France shirt).
